About Trillium Architects

Trillium Architects is a 7 person, full service, boutique architectural firm specializing in Passive House, Net-Zero and off-the-grid new homes, additions, and renovations. Based in Ridgefield, CT, we primarily work in western Connecticut and New York's Hudson Valley, but we've designed homes all over the country.

In 2015 and 2016 we won awards for Best Energy Efficient Home in the USA from both the USGBC and the DOE, we won a 3rd Place International Innovation award which we accepted at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Morocco 2016, and we won Best Emerging Firm in CT from the AIA in 2016.

With the end goal of marrying beauty, usability, and the cutting edge of efficient design, we strive to always make the client experience of building or renovating their home top notch.

At #WestchesterPassiveReno the team has been hard at work sealing the house in preparation for the blower door test. We’re eagerly awaiting our window delivery, but in the meantime we’re the smurfiest house in town. #TrilliumArchitects

On this President’s day, we applaud President Jimmy Carter who, In 1979, was the first president to install Solar Panels at the White House. His 32-Panel array on the roof of the White House was used to heat water. Though the panels were subsequently removed, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama reintroduced the White House grounds and building to renewable energy through solar panels. #presidentsday

Otis's House! Can a Glass Box Modern House really be energy efficient? This one will be! Stay tuned. The steel frame will be wrapped in thick insulation, as will all of the walls, floor and roof. The south facing glass wall will have deep overhangs to optimize solar energy harvesting.

Our #CoastalModern is perched on a granite outcropping, and we’re excited to see it rising into view as framing progresses. Right now we have 1st floor exterior walls and the 2-story steel frame that faces the water view. Stay tuned for more progress photos! #TrilliumArchitects

In Passive House construction, we orient our structures to take advantage of solar paths. For instance, in the Northeast, we utilize South-facing windows to benefit from natural heating from the Winter Sun. These amazing cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde from the 12th century are on a dynamic site. The overhead cliffs protect them from the high summer sun while the south-facing masonry walls take advantage of low winter sun. The rock formations provide additional protection from the harsh environment. A true testament to using existing elements on your site to your advantage.

Round 2 - To get expansive modern windows for #CoastalModern we used an Aluprof curtain wall system from EAS. These triple-glazed units are so heavy that many of them were delivered in multiple pieces. Here they’re moving one of our largest glass assemblies with a vacuum lift. #TrilliumArchitects
